This role is a highly skilled one. Many people take them for granted and believe they just drive; this couldn’t be further from the truth. As we have seen in many high profile incidents the car is the most likely place for an ambush or accident.

The driver is responsible for the following; maintenance of the vehicle, a daily check, again dependant on the threat this may involve identifying devices that may have been planted, cleanliness of the vehicle, supplying papers, tissues and music. Once on the road the driver must be able to get from A to B, be in contact with the CP who is sitting next to him and the PES who will be following in a back up car. The driver will be constantly evaluating the road and his surroundings. He will be trained in defensive and evasive driving skills.
